Learn Its guide

Learn Its
'Learn Its' are key number facts that children need to learn so that they can do more complicated calculations with ease. They are taught sequentially and children need to practise regularly so that they can rapidly recall the facts without thinking or counting on their fingers. Children are introduced to the “Big Maths Beat That” challenge in the Autumn Term, moving onto once a week in Spring Term as children become more familiar with Learn It and CLIC tests. The scores are recorded to inform teacher's planning for the following week. Children will not be able to complete all elements of the CLIC tests to begin with but continued regular practice and targeted teaching will help to build their confidence with a range of calculations over time.

Children in the Reception class will start practising Learn-Its in the Summer Term. There is an expectation that Learn Its are completed in Summer Y4/Autumn Y5. The National Curriculum states that children should know all of their times tables by the end of Year 4. However, to ensure that children have rapid recall of these facts, we continue with tables tests in upper KS2, extending to decimals and larger numbers.
